Spain Approves €6.6M Upgrade for Key A-7 Junction to Nerja

Spain has approved a €6.6M overhaul of the A-7 highway junction at Caleta de Vélez, promising smoother airport transfers and safer travel toward Nerja.

The journey between Málaga Airport and Nerja is set to become significantly smoother. Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has officially approved a major €6.6 million infrastructure upgrade to remodel the A-7 Mediterranean motorway junction at Caleta de Vélez.

For travelers heading eastward along the Costa del Sol toward Nerja, Torrox, and Frigiliana, this junction is a familiar milestone. Currently, peak summer traffic and local movements around the coastal marina can create congestion at this key node. The planned remodeling aims to eliminate bottlenecks, increase overall traffic safety, and improve vehicular flow along one of the busiest stretches of the Axarquía corridor.

Better Connections for the Eastern Costa del Sol

The A-7 motorway serves as the primary lifeline for visitors arriving at Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) and traveling to Nerja. The junction at Caleta de Vélez provides essential access not only to local residential zones and commercial hubs, but also to the marina of Caleta de Vélez and nearby beaches.

With an allocated budget of €6.6 million, the project focuses on reconfiguring the access points and slip roads. By separating local coastal traffic from long-distance transit heading further east, the intervention will reduce sudden braking, streamline merging maneuvers, and decrease the risk of rear-end collisions during heavy travel days.

What It Means for Visitors to Nerja

Anyone who has driven the A-7 during midsummer or bank holiday weekends knows that junctions serving busy coastal ports often experience sudden slowdowns. Once completed, this upgrade will provide a much more reliable driving time between the airport and Nerja.

Travelers will benefit from: - Smoother Airport Transfers: Whether renting a car or booking a transfer shuttle, transit times will be more consistent. - Easier Coastal Excursions: Taking day trips from Nerja to visit the harbor at Caleta de Vélez, play a round at nearby golf courses, or explore Vélez-Málaga will involve less hassle at highway exits. - Enhanced Road Safety: Modernised slip lanes offer safer acceleration and deceleration distances for holidaymakers unfamiliar with local exits.

While construction work may bring temporary lane adjustments once ground is broken, the long-term result promises a safer and faster gateway to the eastern Costa del Sol.
