Ronda Inaugurates Suspended Walkway Along the Iconic Tajo Gorge
Ronda has opened a new pedestrian walkway suspended along the sheer cliffs of the Tajo Gorge, funded by a €675,000 investment from the Diputación de Málaga.
Ronda has officially unveiled its latest architectural and tourism milestone: a suspended pedestrian walkway tracing the dramatic rock walls of the renowned Tajo Gorge (*Desfiladero del Tajo*). The project, backed by a €675,000 investment from the Provincial Council of Málaga (Diputación de Málaga), opens up an entirely new vantage point on one of Andalusia’s most celebrated natural and historic landscapes.
For decades, travellers have admired the soaring Puente Nuevo from lookouts above or from hiking paths deep on the valley floor. This new path suspended against the canyon's vertical limestone faces invites visitors to walk along the gorge itself, passing directly beneath the monumental arches of Ronda’s iconic bridge.
A Fresh Angle on an Iconic Landmark
The Tajo Gorge splits the historic town of Ronda in two, plunging down to the Guadalevín riverbed below. While the views from the clifftop balconies of the old town and the Parador are legendary, the suspended footbridge provides a breathtaking shift in perspective.
Clinging carefully along the sheer cliff sides, the engineered walkway allows walkers to appreciate the immense scale of the bridge from mid-canyon. Strolling along the structure offers close-up views of the rugged rock formations and the centuries-old masonry of the bridge, combining natural wonder with engineering history.
What It Means for Travellers from Nerja and the Axarquía
While Nerja and the eastern Costa del Sol are known for coastal beauty and mountain backdrops, inland day trips remain an essential part of exploring the wider province of Málaga. Ronda stands out as one of the most rewarding full-day road trips from Nerja.
Driving from Nerja takes approximately two hours, winding past Málaga city and up through the Serranía de Ronda. The arrival of the gorge walkway gives visitors an exciting new highlight to include alongside traditional stops like the historic bullring, the old Moorish quarter, and local tapas bars. Experiencing the gorge suspended between cliff and sky adds an active, unforgettable dimension to a day spent exploring the interior.
Planning Your Visit
Because the walkway traces a steep natural chasm, visitors should wear sensible walking shoes and be prepared for canyon heights. The excursion pairs perfectly with morning strolls across the upper bridge before descending to view the canyon from within. Exploring during milder hours of the day ensures the best light across the gorge’s stone walls and a more comfortable walk along the trail.
