Periana Invests Over €600,000 in Lake Viñuela Leisure Zone
Periana is investing over €600,000 to create a new lakeside recreational area at Lake Viñuela, enhancing outdoor tourism facilities in the Axarquía interior.
The inland landscapes of the Axarquía are set to become even more inviting for nature lovers and day-trippers. Periana town council has announced a major investment exceeding €600,000 to construct a brand-new recreational area along the perimeter of Lake Viñuela (*Embalse de La Viñuela*).
As the primary reservoir of the region, Lake Viñuela is already a favourite backdrop for those exploring beyond the Mediterranean coastline. This substantial funding commitment aims to modernise leisure infrastructure, boost eco-friendly tourism, and provide well-equipped public spaces where both residents and travellers can relax amidst spectacular mountain scenery.
Transforming the Lakeside Experience
The initiative focuses on developing designated leisure amenities around the lake basin. With more than €600,000 allocated to the project, the planned upgrades are geared towards improving outdoor tourism while safeguarding the natural surroundings.
For years, the shores of Lake Viñuela have drawn hikers, cyclists, and families seeking picnic spots with sweeping views of the surrounding olive groves and the imposing Sierra de Tejeda peaks. The creation of a purpose-built recreational zone within Periana’s municipal limits will formalise outdoor spaces, offering structured facilities that make spending a full day by the water more comfortable and accessible.
A Scenic Excursion from Nerja
For holidaymakers based along the coast in Nerja, Lake Viñuela represents one of the easiest and most picturesque inland escapes. Situated roughly 35 to 40 minutes inland by car via the A-7 motorway and the A-356, the area offers a peaceful contrast to the bustling beaches.
Visiting this inland hub allows travellers to combine open-air recreation around the reservoir with stops at charming white villages like Periana—famous for its traditional olive oil and peach orchards—as well as the nearby hamlet of La Viñuela. Whether you plan an afternoon walk along the water’s edge or a scenic rural drive through the valley, the new recreational facilities will offer an attractive staging ground for exploring the Axarquía interior.
