Málaga Temporarily Halts Low Emission Zone Traffic Fines
Málaga City Council has paused traffic fines for its Low Emission Zone (ZBE) starting 14 October 2026, offering welcome flexibility for drivers travelling from Nerja.
Planning a day trip to Málaga from Nerja just got slightly simpler for motorists. Málaga City Council has decided to temporarily suspend traffic fines linked to its Low Emission Zone (Zona de Bajas Emisiones, or ZBE), with the pause taking effect from Wednesday, 14 October 2026.
For visitors staying in Nerja or exploring the wider Axarquía coast, driving into the provincial capital is often part of the itinerary. Whether you are heading in for museum visits, shopping along Calle Larios, or catching a flight at the airport after an urban detour, this suspension provides immediate peace of mind regarding automated penalties.
What the suspension means for drivers
Many drivers—especially tourists navigating Spanish roads in rental vehicles—have been concerned about the environmental badges (distintivos ambientales) and whether their cars comply with urban low-emission guidelines. With the automated fines paused starting 14 October 2026, the risk of receiving an unexpected municipal penalty for entering the central ZBE perimeter is temporarily lifted while city officials carry out adjustments to the enforcement framework.
The measure directly benefits day-trippers and commuters coming from the eastern Costa del Sol along the A-7 motorway. While standard traffic regulations and regular parking rules remain strictly enforced, motorists will not face ZBE-related sanctions during this transitional period.
Driving from Nerja to Málaga
The journey between Nerja and central Málaga takes approximately 45 to 55 minutes via the coastal A-7 autovía. While the suspension makes accessing central districts less stressful, driving through historic streets remains busy, especially during peak hours.
If you are travelling by car, parking in public underground car parks around the port (Muelle Uno), Plaza de la Marina, or El Corte Inglés remains the most practical way to reach the pedestrianised centre without having to search for street spots.
