La Quema de Algarrobo Historical Festival Returns September 18-20
The historic festival 'La Quema de Algarrobo' returns from September 18 to 20, bringing 19th-century street theatre and Napoleonic battle re-enactments to the Axarquía just west of Nerja.
Stepping Back to the 19th Century in Algarrobo
From September 18 to 20, 2026, the neighbouring village of Algarrobo steps back in time to the early 19th century. The historic coastal and hillside town is hosting another edition of *La Quema de Algarrobo*, an annual festival that commemorates the local population's spirited defiance against Napoleonic forces during the Peninsular War.
For three days, Algarrobo transforms into a living history stage. Villagers and historical societies dress in meticulous period attire—from Andalusian bandits (*bandoleros*) and ordinary villagers to the invading French imperial troops. The streets and squares become venues for theatrical re-enactments, dramatic skirmishes, and cultural celebrations that bring the region's 1811 history vividly to life.
What to Expect at La Quema
The core of the celebration is theatrical re-enactments depicting the dramatic events when Napoleon’s troops attempted to burn the village in retaliation for local guerrilla ambushes. Through street performances and historical staging, visitors can watch scenes unfolding directly on the cobblestone lanes and town squares.
Beyond the military and civilian dramas, the festival embraces a celebratory atmosphere. Expect lively community gatherings, historical costumes at every turn, and a welcoming Andalusian village setting. Local bars, restaurants, and stalls cater to festival-goers, offering a chance to sample the traditional flavours of the Axarquía while soaking in the period ambiance.
Planning Your Visit from Nerja
Algarrobo lies just a short distance west of Nerja along the Axarquía coast, making it exceptionally easy to visit for an afternoon or an evening outing.
Whether you travel by car along the coastal A-7 motorway / N-340 or catch a regional bus heading west toward Torre del Mar and Málaga, the journey takes only around 15 to 20 minutes from central Nerja. The festival takes place mainly in the inland village center (Algarrobo Pueblo), situated just a few kilometres up from the coastal strip of Algarrobo Costa.
Visiting during the weekend of September 18–20 offers a fantastic opportunity to combine a relaxing holiday in Nerja with an authentic, community-driven cultural festival that highlights the rich historical heritage of the surrounding Axarquía.
