Frigiliana again named one of Spain's most beautiful villages

The whitewashed village above Nerja is again praised for its Moorish quarter, flower-lined alleys and Mediterranean views — here's how to visit on a half-day trip.

Frigiliana once again appears on several international rankings of Spain's most beautiful villages. The whitewashed pueblo blanco, seven kilometres from Nerja up in the mountains, is praised for its well-preserved Moorish-Mudéjar quarter, narrow lanes decorated with flowerpots and sweeping views down to the Mediterranean.

The village has a long and dramatic history. The Moorish population staged one of its last uprisings against the Spanish crown here in 1569, an event remembered on the twelve ceramic plaques set into the walls along the path through Barribarto. Today the story comes alive through cultural events such as the Festival de las Tres Culturas, which each late summer celebrates the village's Jewish, Christian and Muslim heritage.

For visitors based in Nerja, a half-day trip to Frigiliana is a classic excursion. Bus line 1 from Nerja's bus station runs regularly, the journey takes around 15 minutes and tickets cost just a few euros.

Good to know - Comfortable shoes are essential — the streets are steep and cobbled. - Try the local 'miel de caña' sugarcane molasses honey. - The best time for photos is early morning before the day-trip buses arrive.
