Work Begins on Chilches to Benajarafe Coastal Footpath
Work has begun on a new seaside footpath between Chilches and Benajarafe in the Axarquía, featuring wide pedestrian pavements, lighting, and parking.
A key connection along the eastern Costa del Sol is finally taking shape. Construction has officially started on a coastal pedestrian path linking the seaside communities of Chilches and Benajarafe, situated within the municipality of Vélez-Málaga. For residents and visitors exploring the western side of the Axarquía coast, this development promises a safer, more scenic, and vastly improved way to move along the Mediterranean shoreline on foot.
Connecting La Rincona and La Esperanza
The current works target a critical segment along this stretch of coast, focusing specifically on the route between the residential developments of La Rincona and La Esperanza. Historically, pedestrians navigating between these adjoining coastal neighbourhoods have had to share tight road shoulders, making everyday strolls or seaside runs less than ideal.
This new infrastructure directly bridges that gap, creating a seamless pedestrian corridor designed to encourage walking and improve local connectivity between the two beach communities.
Modern Infrastructure for Walkers and Drivers
The blueprint for the project brings much more than just a simple dirt trail. The new promenade will feature dedicated pedestrian pavements that are at least two metres wide, offering ample space for pushchairs, runners, and leisurely walkers to pass comfortably.
Alongside the wider walkways, the project incorporates: - Dedicated car parking spaces, easing access for motorists heading to the beach or starting a walk along the shore. - Energy-efficient street lighting, ensuring safety and accessibility during pleasant evening strolls after sunset. - Underground storm drains, essential infrastructure to prevent surface flooding and water accumulation during the autumn and winter rains typical of southern Spain. - Landscaped green spaces, introducing coastal vegetation to enhance the visual appeal of the route and integrate the path naturally into the coastal landscape.
What It Means for Axarquía Visitors
For travellers staying in Nerja or touring the wider Axarquía coast, the path adds another accessible seaside walk to explore. Benajarafe and Chilches offer tranquil, wide sandy beaches lined with traditional chiringuitos, far removed from the denser tourist hubs of the central Costa del Sol.
Located west of Torre del Mar and roughly 30 minutes by car from Nerja via the A-7 and N-340, this area provides an easy afternoon outing. The completion of wide pavements and new parking spots will make it much simpler to stop, leave the car, and take a relaxed stroll with uninterrupted views of the sea.
