Balcón de Europa to be renovated before summer

New marble, modern LED lighting and accessibility upgrades — how Nerja's most photographed landmark is being refreshed before the summer rush.

Nerja's iconic viewpoint, the Balcón de Europa, is undergoing a major refresh ahead of the summer season. The town council has begun replacing the worn marble paving, upgrading the railings and installing new LED lighting that highlights the promenade's palm trees and the famous statue of King Alfonso XII.

The project is part of a wider effort to improve the town centre. Beyond the balcony itself, the stairways down to Playa Calahonda and Playa El Salón are being restored, and additional shade trees will be planted along Calle Puerta del Mar. The aim is to ease congestion during peak season and make the centre more accessible for wheelchair users and pushchairs.

Work is being carried out in phases so the Mediterranean view is never fully closed off. Restaurants and kiosks along the balcony remain open as usual, though visitors may need short detours around fenced sections.

Good to know - Phased works typically run weekdays 08:00–14:00. - The best photographs are taken early morning or at dusk when the new lighting comes on. - Closest parking: Plaza de España and the underground Parking Balcón de Europa.
