A-7 Motorway Junction at Caleta de Vélez Gets €6.6M Upgrade Approval
The Spanish Ministry of Transport has approved a €6.6M upgrade for the A-7 Caleta de Vélez junction, promising smoother transfers between Málaga, Vélez-Málaga, and Nerja.
For travellers heading between Málaga Airport and the eastern Costa del Sol, the journey is set to become smoother and safer. Spain's Ministry of Transport has officially granted final approval for a major upgrade to the Caleta de Vélez junction along the A-7 Mediterranean motorway.
With an allocated budget of €6.6 million, the project aims to resolve a long-standing logistical bottleneck that connects key coastal hubs in the Axarquía region.
A Crucial Bottleneck Addressed
The A-7 motorway serves as the primary transport artery along Andalusia's southern coast, carrying thousands of daily commuters, freight vehicles, and holidaymakers between Málaga city, Vélez-Málaga, and Nerja. However, the existing junction at Caleta de Vélez has historically lacked complete slip roads, forcing motorists into indirect detours and causing periodic congestion during peak periods.
Under the newly approved scheme, transport authorities will build out the missing connections and reconfigure access points. Completing the missing link will streamline traffic movements on and off the motorway, easing travel not just for residents of Vélez-Málaga and Torre del Mar, but also for drivers continuing eastwards toward Torrox and Nerja.
What It Means for Nerja Visitors
Anyone flying into Málaga Airport and renting a car or booking a transfer to Nerja typically relies on this exact stretch of the A-7. Upgrading the Caleta de Vélez interchange provides several tangible benefits for regional travel:
- Smoother transfers: By eliminating slow exit manoeuvres and bottlenecks around Caleta de Vélez, the entire corridor should experience fewer unexpected delays.
- Improved local access: Exploring the marina at Caleta de Vélez, the historic centre of Vélez-Málaga, or the seaside promenades of Torre del Mar will become noticeably more straightforward.
- Enhanced road safety: Upgrading junction design and adding dedicated slip lanes significantly reduces the risk of tailbacks on the high-speed carriageway.
While work along active highways inevitably brings temporary lane narrowing or minor speed restrictions once construction begins, the long-term payoff will be a modernised corridor connecting the capital to the Axarquía's easternmost coves.
